We are mere mortals.

When the earth trembles and nature takes over,
When giant tsunami waves engulf tranquil marinas,
When the skies are overcast with unseasonal clouds,
A mere mortal wonders what is life all about?

Sweet memories, happy moments,
Harsh words and bitterness accumulated over the years,
Other accumulations at shopping sprees,
Curios and knick knacks and mementoes galore,

Where do I go from here,
What do I take with me,
When I came I came alone,
When I go I will go alone

Why do I then collect happy memories,
Curios, knick knacks and mementoes?
Why do I think of what is yours and mine,
What makes me build castles in the air?

When nature strikes it strikes equally,
Borders do not stop it,
Caste, colour, rich or poor,
Mansions and pavement dwellers,
Street children and fishermen,
All become chastised  and equal before the laws of nature.
After all this a mere mortal wonders and looks askance,
Nature is it true that your might is always right?

This is the angst of existence, questions that have plagued humankind from the beginning. Plato says 'Philosophy is a meditation on death'. Though we cannot find answers to the fury and unpredictabilty of 'Nature' we can move towards a balanced state of existence by looking at ourselves inwardly - erasing all the pettiness and baseness from our own nature. I think it would be apt to quote a few lines from the Gita as they do relate to some of the questions you have raised in your well etched out poem -

What have you lost that you cry for?
What did you bring that you have lost?
What did you create that has been destroyed?
What you have taken, has been given from here,
What you gave has been from here.

Dinesh Kumar Jain," When mere mortals ac.uire too much vanity and interfere with the balance of nature, such events tell you to assume humility instead. We need to live in harmony with the nature. I doubt if that is possible with the growing population and rising consumption levels every single day."

Sneh Dhingra, " Yes, we mere mortals can only ponder and wonder about the reasoning behind the catastrophes and our role here. Very well written!"

The futility of it all, the helplessness when the nature strikes, the vulnerability of the mortals, all have been captured very well in this beautiful poem Varsha.
